Japan First Trip Planning Guide
A beginner-friendly guide to planning a first Japan itinerary across Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and one slower side trip.
Classic Route
For a first visit, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka make a strong spine. They offer contrast without forcing constant hotel changes or complex transport decisions.
A seven-to-ten day trip can work with three bases. Longer trips can add Hakone, Kanazawa, Hiroshima, or a mountain town depending on the season.
Transit Rhythm
Keep long train transfers in the middle of the day, when possible, so mornings and evenings still feel usable. Build in station time for luggage, food, and finding the right platform.
Rail passes are not automatically the best deal. Compare your actual route before buying, especially if you are staying mostly along one corridor.
What To Reserve
Reserve popular restaurants, special museum entries, and seasonal experiences early. Keep ordinary meals flexible, because Japan is full of excellent low-friction food options.
If cherry blossom or autumn color is the goal, treat dates as a planning range rather than a guarantee. Weather still gets a vote.
